My approach as a therapist

Who can I help?

I am a therapist who helps people struggling with a wide range of issues; in particular, abuse, anxiety, trauma and depression.  I have experience of working in a number of settings, including for young people, domestic abuse & trauma survivors and university students.

How do I work?

I hold an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling, which means I have a number of different approaches to use in my work with you.  These approaches may include Person Centred Counselling, Gestalt therapy, Transactional Analysis and Existential therapy, though I think the most important thing is that the way I work will be unique to your preferences and your needs.

Particular groups I can help

My background and experience means that I offer understanding and empathetic support for a wide range of clients, including:

  • Neurodiverse clients

  • Young people over the age of 12

  • University Students

  • Military personnel and Veterans

  • Emergency Services / Blue Light personnel

If you've never experienced therapy or feel daunted at the prospect, then do give me a call to discuss it.  I felt uncertain once upon a time, so I have some understanding of how it can feel.  Just pick up your phone and we can take things from there.  Phone or WhatsApp me; it's a small step to start feeling differently.

Wild Dartmoor

I feel passionate about nature in all its forms, and this influences my counselling work.  There's not much to rival the wild beauty of Dartmoor or the quiet power of the sea on the Devon coast.  The ability of nature to lift the human spirit is unrivalled.

All the photos you see here have been taken by me and my family on our wild wanderings, mainly in the stunning Devon landscapes.

How I got here...
People, Relationships and Challenges

A large part of my identity will always be rooted in the Royal Navy, which I joined in the early 1990s and served with for many years.  I was lucky enough to be deployed all over the world and quickly realised the importance of positive relationships in working effectively with diverse groups of people.  It was a hugely enjoyable, challenging and rewarding career that took me to my limits and beyond.

After leaving the Services, I pursued a Master's degree in Psychology while working in higher education, having discovered that my true passion lay in helping others understand the complexity of their relationships with themselves and others. This eventually led me to train as a counsellor at Iron Mill College in Exeter. â€‹

My life experiences bring a huge amount to who I am as a counsellor: though I am logical and calm, I am also warm and empathetic. This feels like a good combination for the clients I work with.  As well as working with a range of adult clients, I've worked as a counsellor for children, university students and  survivors of (complex) trauma and domestic abuse.

I live in rural Devon with my family, which includes animals of all types, from dogs to bees...  It feels great to be able to involve one of my dogs in the counselling sessions; not only can he provide something really special for my clients, but he thoroughly enjoys being involved in the process too.
